TMJ Exercises

TMJ can severely affect your quality of life. When it is even hard to smile and painful to chew food, it takes a lot of inner strength not to get frustrated. Thankfully, there are many ways you can manage your TMJ pain. As with Diabetes, a proper diet and some small lifestyle adjustments can make a very effective TMJ treatment. Another way you can help cure TMJ is by doing exercises. Your jaw is just another muscle, and it can be strengthened like all the others. The pain results from your jaw muscles overworking themselves to overcompensate for your bone deficiency. Strengthening those muscles helps alleviate a lot of the TMJ symptoms. Eating gives your jaw plenty of exercise normally, but you may want to strengthen those muscles a little more to help them along.

It is estimated that 5 to 15 percent of the world have some kind of TMJ related problems. A little exercise can often help prevent and even overcome issues that are associated with the disorder. It is important though that you consult your doctor to get the proper exercise regiment for you so you do not exasperate the condition more.

Normally ice and heat are what you apply to a soar joint. Ice for the muscular swelling, and heat to promote blood flow to the joint. Once the joint starts to feel better, you can strengthen the muscles around it to prevent the pain from happening again. Don’t overdo the exercise, take it slow, and be aware of what is too much for yourself. You don’t want to end up doing more harm than good. Also exercise routines like Makko Ho have been known to improve your posture and overall muscle relaxation.

It’s important to understand exactly why you are having TMJ pain in the first place. Consult your doctor to get the exact reason and cause. Exercises can’t help in every instance, but over a long period of time and on a regular basis they can make a real difference. Your jaw muscles will get stronger and be better able to compensate for the missing pieces in your Temporomandibular joint.
